OTTAWA, ON (September 4, 2018) – On October 30th, Trucking HR Canada will host its first symposium on mental health in the workplace. The symposium, entitled Gearing Up for Workplace Mental Health, is a step towards increasing understanding of mental and psychological health in the workplace. As part of Trucking HR Canada’s larger initiative to support employers on this evolving issue, the event will provide guidance on the implementation of practical resources and strategies for all occupations within the sector.

Moderated by Sonia Straface, Assistant Editor at Truck News, the “Trucking Talks Mental Health” panel will bring together subject matter experts including:

  • Andrew Harkness, Strategy Advisor – Organizational Health Initiatives, Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS)
  • Linda Corkum, Executive Director, Nova Scotia Trucking Safety Association
  • Miguel Mangalindan, Associate Lawyer, Monkhouse Law
  • Tammy Whelen, Mental Health Educator, Canadian Mental Health Association
  • Yvone Defreitas, Director of Human Resources and Organization Effectiveness, Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety

David Henry, Truck Driver for REK Express, will open the day, courageously sharing his own story about how mental health challenges have impacted his career and how he became a high performing driver.

“This is an issue that should be top of mind for all trucking and logistics employers.” Says Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada, “Providing employers with best practices and the right resources to deal with mental health issues in the workplace will support overall employee health and wellness, which in turn impacts productivity, retention, and more.”

The half-day event will take place at the Centre for Health and Safety Innovation in Mississauga, running from 8am to 1pm and is open to all trucking and logistics employers. Early bird registration rates end on September 28, 2018.
